OMG. What a dream come true. For someone who grew up on X-Files and is mildly convinced they may have been beamed in from another planet, the UFO watchtower was a MUST go to! Once I found this place, I planned our whole trip around it. Not kidding. The UFO watchtower has been featured in The New York Times as well as Roadside America among others. It was started by a woman named Judy Messoline, who we met – she was fantastic. This place was bizarre and wonderful, and very very kitschy in the best way.
Aside from the Garden outside, there is a campground (no, we didn’t stay), the watchtower itself, and inside, a small museum that Judy keeps up. Tons of records of alien encounters, first hand stories, photos, gifts, everything you could want! I could have spent all day there just pouring over everybody’s stories, I find it so fascinating.
If you ever find yourself in SE Colorado, the UFO watchtower is absolutely worth a stop. After, we stayed in the small ~spiritual mecca~ of Crestone, CO, where we hiked to a ziggurat and got lost driving around all the winding roads to our airbnb.
